We are so excited to announce that our new Norwegian-style playhouses have arrived at the Hame fae Hame nursery this week!
Lovingly built by local construction firm DITT, the new playhouses are modelled on Norwegian homes to further solidify the link we have with our friends across the North Sea.
The Shetland & Scalloway ties with Norway go back centuries, and we see this as the perfect opportunity to tell the bairns all about the Shetland Bus which is a huge part of the history here in Scalloway!
The Shetland Bus was the vital link between the Shetland mainland and Norway as it battled with Germany during WW2. This includes transporting military personnel, special agents, weapons and agents between Shetland and Norway. In the earlier years of the operation conducted by special services many of the trips were done without any lighting under the cover of darkness and many were lost at sea. Thankfully this would change when the route was covered by submarine chasers and not fishing boats.
We are so thrilled with the work done by DITT and want to extend our absolute thanks to Peter and his team!
